OBERSTDORF, Germany (AFP) - German cross country skier Viola Bauer was on Tuesday presented with the Olympic bronze medal which she won retrospectively after Russian pair Olga Danilova and Larissa Lazutina were disqualified for doping.
The 27-year-old Bauer, who came fifth in the winter Olympics 5+5km pursuit event held at Solider Hollow, was awarded the medal following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport who effectively ruled on the Russians' ban.
Danilova had won gold in the event and Lazutina, one of the most decorated women nordic skiers of all time, won the silver.
After the skiers' disqualification, and subsequent ban, the Olympic title and gold medal was awarded to Canada's Beckie Scott, who was awarded her medal in June. The silver medal went to third place finisher Katerina Neumannova of the Czech Republic.
Bauer received her medal Tuesday from Swiss Gianfranco Kasper, the president of the International Ski Federation (FIS), who was here to inspect venues ahead of the world nordic ski championships in February.
Bauer said: "The fact I was awarded my Olympic medal here just makes me more determined for the world championships in four months' time."
