ST PETERSBURG, Florida, Oct 19 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush was to court elderly voters at The Villages, a sprawling Florida retirement community of about 50,000 people -- and the sales office was ready.
A telephone call to The Villages real estate office yielded an automated message: "Our hometown is pleased to play home to the campaign trail, as we welcome President George W. Bush. Due to the excitement surrounding this event, you may be asked to hold for the next available operator."
The elderly tend to turn out in proportionately greater numbers than younger voters, and play an especially key role in Florida, the richest prize among the dozen or so up-for-grabs states that will decide the November 2 election.
An sales office operator who picked up the phone a few minutes later said The Villages is home to some 50,000 people, and added that she would miss Bush's speech there because she was working.
"It's disappointing, but at least I have my red, white and blue on," she said, declining to give her name.
