MIAMI (AFP) - American Lindsay Davenport captured the WTA world No. 1 spot in the rankings, unseating France's Amelie Mauresmo.
Davenport assured herself of claiming the number one spot with a second-round victory last week in Moscow, where Mauresmo didn't play. The American eventually fell in the semi-finals of the Kremlin Cup.
She had been gaining on Mauresmo, narrowing the gap the previous week when she claimed the WTA title in Filderstadt, Germany, when Mauresmo withdrew from the final with a strained left thigh.
Davenport regained the world number one ranking for the first time since June 2001.
Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne tumbled three spots to sixth, while Russian Anastasia Myskina, the French Open champion who defeated Davenport en route to claiming the title in Moscow on Sunday, moved up to third.
