Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect injured in shootout with NATO

SARAJEVO (AFP) - NATO-led peacekeepers wounded a Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect in a shootout as they tried to arrest him, the peacekeepers said in a statement.
The NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR) said the incident occurred in the southeastern town of Bileca as troops supported Bosnian authorities "in the arrest of a wanted criminal".
SFOR did not name the suspect but said he was wanted on a "local warrant for war crimes" and had been arrested after the exchange of fire.
Bosnian Serb police have identified him as Nedjo Samardzic, who was indicted with war crimes by a Sarajevo court in 2002. The crimes were allegedly committed in the southeastern town of Foca early in Bosnia's 1992-95 war.
"During the arrest, the individual attempted to evade capture by drawing a weapon and firing on the SFOR soldiers. The SFOR soldiers returned fire in self defence, injuring the individual," the SFOR statement said.
