US convoy comes under fire in western Iraq

RAMADI, Iraq, Oct 17 (AFP) - A US military convoy was targeted in a rocket attack Sunday between Ramadi and Fallujah, the two Iraqi cities that have come to symbolise the heart of the deadly Sunni Muslim insurgency, police said.
Insurgents attacked the convoy at 9 am (0600 GMT), setting ablaze a military vehicle, said a police officer who patrols the road.
The US military had no immediate confirmation of the attack in the western al-Anbar province, the eye of the storm in the battle between US forces and insurgents.
Elsewhere in Anbar province, insurgents dynamited the building housing the local council in Rutba, a town near the Jordanian border, police said.
There was no immediate word on casualties. The attack fits a recent pattern among the insurgents who blew up an Islamic Red Crescent building in Ramadi earlier this month.
In the northwestern city of Hit, police chief Saber Nemrawi was kicked out by tribesman and the local council after a firefight Monday ended with US marines calling in aircraft that shelled a mosque.
