AMMAN, Oct 14 (AFP) - The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees voiced hope Thursday of a new era opening up in relations with Israel after false accusations by Israel against the United Nations.
"I hope that we have seen the last false accusation against UNRWA," Peter Hansen told reporters here after a meeting of donor countries and other states hosting Palestinian refugees.
He also said he hoped Israel would "start behaving towards this agency as they should behave".
Hansen said that UNRWA staff were harrassed at Israeli military checkpoints. On Wednesday, he announced that an UNRWA employee had been killed in the Palestinian territories bringing to 11 the number killed since September 2000.
And the UN official again demanded an apology from Israel for wrongfully accusing it of allowing Palestinians to smuggle rockets in its ambulances.
The army has since said it was wrong, and Hansen on Wednesday demanded an apology.
The Israeli army released grainy footage of what it said was Palestinian militants loading a Qassam rocket into an UNRWA vehicle. Hansen had categorically denied the accusation.
