STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Sony Ericsson, the Swedish-Japanese maker of mobile phones, posted a 45 percent rise in net profits in the third quarter as a broadened product mix and the success of its camera phones bolstered sales.
Sony Ericsson registered a net profit of 90 million euros (111.2 million dollars) in the July-September period, compared to 62 million euros during the same period a year ago.
The group sold 10.7 million mobile phones during the quarter, up 51 percent from a year earlier.
"Sony Ericsson has enhanced its portfolio during the quarter with the launch of exciting products. Over 60 percent of phones sold during the quarter featured integrated cameras which illustrates our position as a market leader in mobile imaging," the chief executive of Sony Ericsson, Miles Flint, said Thursday.
Sales grew by 29 percent to 1.67 billion euros, up from from 1.30 billion.
Meanwhile, pre-tax profit more than tripled, to 136 million euros from 39 million, far above the 122 million euros expected by analysts.
Sony Ericsson provided no forecast for the fourth quarter nor the year as a whole.
The world's largest mobile phone maker, Nokia, was meanwhile expected to release its third quarter earnings report later Wednesday.
