OTTAWA, Oct 10 (AFP) - Canada's government on Sunday offered its congratulations to Afghanistan following landmark presidential elections there this weekend.
"I congratulate the Afghan Transitional Authority for conducting this historic election," Canada's Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew said in a statement.
Pettigrew voiced support of Afghanistan's electoral authorities despite claims of voting irregularities which tainted the jubilation among some electors. However, the polls were hailed around the world for the strong turnout and lack of violence.
"This election represents an important milestone in the country's democratic transition and an impressive achievement of the Afghan people," Pettigrew said.
"We are committed to continuing our work with the government and the people of Afghanistan to build a democratic, stable and peaceful country," Canada's top diplomat added.
Canada has donated some 24 million dollars in aid to Afghanistan and currently has some 700 troops serving in Kabul.
