48 inmates break out of Brazilian prison

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 10 (AFP) - A group of 48 inmates broke out of downtown Rio de Janeiro prison early Sunday morning after climbing through a small hole in ceiling, officials said here.
The jailbreak at the Benefica prison occurred as two prison guards failed to conduct night patrols, said Penal Administration Secretary Asterio Pereira.
The two guards, who admitted abandoning their posts, have been arrested while the breakout is investigated, Pereira said.
He added that the escape could have been possible only with inside help.
The inmates climbed onto the prison roof, before climbing over the jail's wall using sheets and clothes that had been tied together.
