Martha Stewart reported to the Alderson federal prison in West Virginia on 8 October 2004, starting a five-month sentence for lying to federal agents about a stock transaction.
Prison staff described her as upbeat on arrival and said she received no special treatment. The next day she was seen walking the grounds by herself and met with two visitors, including her daughter Alexis.
A fellow inmate, relaying word through a visiting relative, described Stewart as "very friendly and very cordial" during her first evening. Others in the facility were less welcoming: some worried the millionaire would be given preferential treatment.
Alderson sits in the Allegheny Mountains about 270 miles southwest of Washington and holds roughly 1,050 inmates.
Stewart, 63, had been convicted in March 2004 on charges of obstructing justice and making false statements to federal agents probing her sale of nearly 4,000 ImClone Systems shares.
