Most French back EU constitution, but not Turkey's entry: poll

PARIS, Oct 9 (AFP) - France would support the proposed EU constitution if a referendum was held this week, but would oppose Turkey's bid to join the European Union, an opinion poll revealed Saturday.
A total of 62 percent of French voters are in favour of ratifying the constitution, adopted by EU leaders in Brussels in June, according to the poll by the BVA institute.
But a similar number, 61 percent, are opposed to Turkey's EU entry.
President Jacques Chirac said on October 1 that he favours changing France's constitution in order to require a national referendum on Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
The French government fears the issue will influence the referendum planned for next year on the EU's new constitutional treaty.
The BVA poll, to be published on Monday in the magazine L'Express, was carried out between October 4 and 6.
