DAMASCUS, Oct 7 (AFP) - Iran's President Mohammad Khatami arrived in the Syrian capital late Thursday on the final leg of a tour that has also taken in Algeria, Sudan and Oman, the state news agency SANA reported.
Khatami, accompanied by Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, was greeted at Damascus airport by Syria's Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara and they went straight on to a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad.
An Iranian diplomatic source said they would discuss the latest international developments and in the region, as well as bilateral ties. Khatami was expected to stay 24 hours in Damascus.
Assad visited Tehran in July for a two-day state visit, when he and Khatami issued a joint call for the departure of US troops from Iraq.
Close allies Iran and Syria have boosted their relations since the US-led invasion of Iraq. Both have been accused by US officials of meddling in the affairs of their common neighbour, a charge denied by Damascus and Tehran.
