European Commission Prodi: What Was Done In Turkey Has Led Commission To Say Yes

BRUSSELS - European Commission President Romano Prodi said on Wednesday that what was done in Turkey has led the Commission to say ''yes'', adding that, there were, however, still many steps to be taken.
Together with European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen, Prodi informed members of the European Parliament on Commission's Progress Report for Turkey.
Prodi said that the Commission's response to Turkey was conditional yes, noting that the conditions they have put forward in the report would be ''keys of success'' for Turkey.
Stressing that Turkey had reached the stage of fulfilling the Copenhagen political criteria after enactment of the new penal code, Prodi said that Turkey, had, in general, fulfilled many things; however, there were still many steps to be taken.
What was done in Turkey has led the Commission to say ''yes'' however, any delay in progress could result in suspension of entry talks, he said.
Noting that they had given a message of compromise to Turkish nation and Turkish government, Prodi called on Turkish people to maintain its progress on the path of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and continue making reforms with determination.
In his message to the EU public opinion, Prodi said, ''Europe with a constitution, with strong institutions and affirmed policies for a strong model of peace and economic wellbeing, has nothing to fear from the accession of Turkey.''
