BRUSSELS - European Union (EU) Commission President Romano Prodi said on Wednesday that Turkey's accession would contribute to the European Union (EU).
Prodi told a press conference that the Commission thought that Turkey met necessary criteria and recommended to open negotiations with Turkey.
Noting that the progress report drew a positive picture, Prodi said, ''Turkey's accession to the EU will make a positive contribution to the Union.''
Stating that implementation of reforms in Turkey was important, Prodi said that the EU would closely monitor the implementation process.
Prodi said, ''we should be careful in this process. There are some uncertainties. For example, level of economic development between Turkey and the EU should be compared. Also, important reforms should be made in agriculture.''
Permanent measures regarding free movement of people could also be taken, Prodi added.
