Blair issues list of demands on "terrible" situation in Darfur

KHARTOUM (AFP) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he handed the Sudanese leadership a list of demands to ease what he called the "terrible" situation in the war-torn western region of Darfur.
After talks with President Omar al-Beshir, Blair called for a peace agreement to cover the whole of Sudan by the end of 2004.
The British prime minister told a press conference that he issued a list of five demands aimed at ending the 19-month-old conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
"We want the government to commit to reaching a comprehensive agreement, north and south, in Sudan by the end of the year," Blair said.
He called for a major boost to African Union forces, all government troops and militia to be identified, agreement with the rebels to withdraw troops, an overall peace accord for Sudan, and Khartoum to facilitate aid distribution.
