Poland should hold referendum on EU constitution end 2005: President

WARSAW, Oct 5 (AFP) - Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski said on Tuesday that a referendum on the EU constitution should take place at the same time as a presidential vote planned for the end of 2005.
"I feel personally that the constitutional treaty should be voted on during the presidential election. That way we would see which presidential candidates are supporters of a Europe united in its diversity," he said, quoted by Polish news agency PAP.
Kwasniewski himself is not eligible to stand as he will have completed two five-year terms.
"The constitutional treaty is not perfect, indeed we had a number of things to say about it, but we do not have the right to take decisions which could split Europe," he said.
According to the latest opinion poll 56 percent of Poles are in favour of ratifying the constitution, adopted by EU leaders in Brussels in June.
Poland, the largest of the EU's 10 new members, finally approved the constitution after holding out against it, notably because of the absence of any reference in the document to Europe's Christian roots.
