Mount St Helens Lets Off More Steam

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Washington, Oct 5 (AFP) - Restive US volcano Mount St. Helens let off more steam Tuesday as hot rock pushing toward the surface melted the peak's glaciers, scientists monitoring the mountain said.
"There is a steam emission," said Jamie Karn, spokeswoman for the US Geological Survey. "Scientists are getting together to see what is happening. We are not sure if it contains ash, I believe it does."
The USGS said that similar steam that twice spewed from the mountain on Monday were likely caused by molten rock melting the ice that covers the mountain's peak.
"We infer that hot rock was pushed up into the glacier, melted ice, and generated the steam," the service said in a statement.
