Spanish government approves gay marriage bill

MADRID (AFP) - The Spanish government approved a bill to legalize homosexual marriages, which will make it only the third country in Europe to condone same sex marriages, cabinet spokeswoman Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said.
The reform notably also grants homosexual couples the right to adopt children. The other two countries where gay marriage is legal are Belgium and the Netherlands, though only the Netherlands allows such unions to adopt children.
Calling it "an important day", she said the vote put Spain "in the forefront of Europe and the world in the fight" to end discrimination against same sex unions.
