LOS ANGELES, Sept 29 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 the Richter scale shook central California on Wednesday, one day after a stronger 6.0 quake hit the same area, seismic monitors said.
No immediate damage or injuries were reported.
The quake was centered nine kilometers (six miles) northeast of the town of Parkfield and struck at 10:10 am (1710 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.
Two minutes later it was followed by a 4.5 quake, with an epicenter eight kilometers northeast of Parkfield.
Parkfield is located roughly half way between the San Francico Bay area and Los Angeles, on California's San Andreas fault.
On Tuesday a 6.0 temblor struck 11 kilometers (seven miles) southeast of Parkfield at 10:15 am (1715 GMT), followed by a wave of smaller quakes measuring up to 5.0 on the Richter scale.
The quake came nine months after one measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the same area of central California, sending one building crashing to the ground and killing two people in Paso Robles.
That quake was centered on the coastal town of San Simeon on December 22, 2003 and wrought the most severe damage in California since a 6.7 quake hit Los Angeles in 1994.
