JERUSALEM, Sept 28 (AFP) - Since the outbreak of the intifada exactly four years ago, at least 3,549 Palestinians and 1,017 Israelis have been killed, according to official figures published Tuesday by Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Statistics released by the Palestinian health ministry showed that since the start of the uprising on September 28, 2000, a total of 3,549 Palestinians have been killed, of which 772 were minors.
Figures published by Shin Bet, the Israeli internal security service, showed that in the same period, 1,017 Israelis were killed, of whom 703 were civilians and 314 were members of the security forces.
According to the Shin Bet, Palestinian militants have carried out 138 suicide bombings, 13,730 shooting attacks and fired 460 Qassam rockets at Israel, all of which left 5,598 people injured.
Palestinian figures show that of the 3,549 dead, 158 were killed in targeted assassinations by the Israeli army -- 75 of them in the West Bank and 83 in the Gaza Strip.
Figures compiled by the Palestinian centre for human rights show that of the total number, 2,477 of Palestinian victims were civilians, while the remaining less than one third were members of Palestinian militant groups.
For its part, the Shin Bet said it had "taken 6,964 Palestinian terrorists out of the cycle of conflict" since its vast Defensive Shield operation in April 2002, of which 959 had been killed and 6,005 had been arrested.
Neither the Shin Bet nor the Palestinians gave details about how the figures -- which add up to a total of 4,566 killed, not including foreigners -- were compiled.
An AFP count gives a lower death toll.
It puts the total number of people killed since the start of the uprising against Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories at 4,345, including 3,326 Palestinians and 948 Israelis.
