Toll in Haiti rises to 1,330 dead, 1,000-plus missing

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Sept 27 (AFP) - At least 1,330 people died and 1,056 remained missing after Tropical Storm Jeanne triggered devastating floods in northern Haiti, Haitian civil protection spokesman Dieufort Delorges told AFP on Monday.
The northern city of Gonaives was the worst hit by the floods. Gonaives Mayor Calixte Valentin said more than 2,000 residents were feared dead in the city of some 200,000 inhabitants.
Civil protection authorities earlier said at least 1,316 people had died and 1,097 were missing. Prime Minister Gerard Latortue has said there were 1,650 dead.
