MILAN (AFP) - The jailed founder and former chief executive of the failed Italian food giant Parmalat, Calisto Tanzi, was released from house arrest but remains subject to some restrictions as he awaits trial for fraud.
Magistrates ruled Tanzi must stay indoors overnight from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am, cannot leave Parma, the town where he lives, and cannot work for a firm.
Two former financial directors of the Italian food giant, Fausto Tonna and Luciano Del Soldato, are to be freed September 30 when their preventative detention expires.
Tanzi, who was arrested December 27 after the collapse of the giant food conglomerate, has a history of heart problems and was hospitalised several times during the three months he spend in detention.
Tanzi faces multiple charges of fraud, and magistrates investigating the company's collapse have discovered an accounting hole of over 14 million euros (18 million dollars).
