New Turkish Penal Code Enacted

ANKARA - Turkish parliament approved the new penal code on Sunday.
The Turkish Penal Code (TCK) was amended after 78 years.
Earlier, 343 articles of the draft TCK were adopted. Remaining two articles of the draft TCK were enacted at an emergency session at the parliament on Sunday.
The new TCK simplifies language of the Penal Code and re-arranges punishments in accordance with today's conditions.
The new TCK defined target of the penal code as protecting individual rights and freedoms, public order and security, rule of law, public health, environment and social peace, and preventing criminal acts.
No one will be published for an act which is not defined as crime in the TCK.
In implementation of the Penal Code, any discrimination among people will not be allowed, and no one will be granted privilege.
Those who are convicted in another country, will be retried in Turkey.
The article about illegal constructions will come into force after the law is published in the Official Gazette.
The arrangements about environmental pollution will come into effect two years after enactment of the law.
The other articles of the law will come into force on April 1, 2005.
