Diplomatic sources say Kuwait is moving to appoint Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah as crown prince, replacing Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Salem al-Sabah, who has been seriously ill for some time. The shift is expected to be formally declared after a ruling-family gathering early next week, once Emir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah returns from medical appointments in New York and a rest stop in Geneva.
A senior royal, National Guard chief Sheikh Salem al-Ali al-Sabah, told Al-Qabas newspaper the coming decisions would open a new chapter for Kuwait and strengthen ties between the ruling house and the public. Younger royals, including the foreign and energy ministers, are also expected to gain higher standing in the reorganization. Sheikh Saad, 74, had led every Kuwaiti government since becoming crown prince in 1978.
