Eastern China Province To Spend 12 Billion Dollars On Railroads

SHANGHAI, (AFP) - China`s eastern Zhejiang province plans to spend 12 billion dollars over the next six years to expand its creaking and overburdended railway system, state press reported.
The move is expected to enable the wealthy province of nearly 50 million people that neighbours Shanghai to enjoy the most advanced railway network by the year 2010, the Liberation Daily said.
New lines will connect all of the province`s cities, while also better linking Zhejiang with the country`s Pearl River delta in southern Guangdong, the communist party mouthpiece said.
The plan also calls for separate cargo lines that will lighten the burden on China`s creaking and overcrowded rail system.
About 12,000 kilometers (7,200 miles) of rail will be laid before 2020 throughout China as part of Beijing`s plans to revamp the national transport network, the report said.
