NEW YORK, Sept 22 (AFP) - CBS television on Wednesday named a former US attorney general and the Associated Press`s recently retired chief to examine a news show`s decision to use questionable documents for a report critical of President George W. Bush`s military service.
The independent review panel is made up of former Pennsylvania governor Dick Thornburgh, who served as attorney general under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and Louis Boccardi, who retired from the AP last year.
"The two-person review panel will commence its work this week and will have full access and complete cooperation from CBS News and CBS, as well as all of the resources necessary to complete the task," CBS said in a statement.
The panel`s findings will be made public, the network said.
The television network announced Monday that it had been misled over the authenticity of documents it used to back up allegations that political pressure had been exerted to "sugar coat" Bush`s service record in the Texas Air National Guard more than 30 years ago.
The story was broadcast September 8 on the network`s "60 Minutes" program, famous for its investigative reporting, and reported by CBS`s top anchor, Dan Rather, who apologized and said CBS could no longer vouch for the documents` authenticity.
