MANCHESTER (AFP) - England could be without key midfielder Steven Gerrard for two 2006 World Cup qualifiers after the Liverpool star was feared to have broken a metatarsal bone in his foot during the 2-1 Premiership defeat by Manchester United.
The 24-year-old left the pitch just before the end of the first-half.
"No one was behind me when (Xabi) Alonso passed to me," Gerrard said Tuesday.
"I turned but my foot stayed in the turf, I'll be devastated if I've broken it." added Gerrard, who left Old Trafford on crutches.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez said: "The doctor said Steven has broken part of his foot - he could be out for a month to six weeks."
If the scan confirms the worst it will mean Gerrard following fellow England team-mates David Beckham, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney in breaking the same bone in their feet in recent years.
It would mean him missing next month's World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Wales.
