BLOOMFIELD HILLS, United States (AFP) - Europe won the 35th Ryder Cup, clinching 14 points to retain the trophy in the team golf matches against the United States.
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and England's Lee Westwood had each clinched no worse than half a point for the Europeans by leading their matches 1-up heading to the 18th hole.
It was Westwood who ensured Europe would retain the Cup with 14 of 28 possible points by sinking a tricky three-foot downhill par putt to halve the final hole, completing a 1-up victory and a full point from his match.
It was Westwood's first singles victory in the Ryder Cup.
It was the fourth time in the past five meetings that Europeans have won the trophy over the Americans. Europe's record is 6-6 with one draw in Cup play since the current format was adopted 25 years ago.
