NEW YORK (AFP) - Jon Lieber took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and had plenty of support from the New York offense as the Yankees posted a 14-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.
Lieber's no-hit bid ended with two outs in the seventh. He pitched into the ninth, allowing three runs and four hits over 8 1/3 innings.
The Yankees scored nine runs in the first two innings and stretched their lead over Boston to 3 1/2 games after losing to the same opponents on Friday.
David Ortiz ended Lieber's no-hit bid with his 38th home run to left field with two outs in the seventh, and Dave Roberts connected for a two-run blast during a three-run ninth for Boston.
But the Red Sox couldn't erase the deficit established early by the Yankees, who jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first thanks in part to a two-run single by Jorge Posada.
The Yankees added four runs in the second inning off Derek Lowe, who was charged with seven runs - six earned - and four hits.
Bernie Williams hit his 19th home run of the season in the fourth inning and Rodriguez added a three-run blast off former Yankee Ramiro Mendoza in the fifth to give New York a 13-0 lead. Posada rounded off the Yankees's scoring with his 19th home run in the eighth.
