BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich scored two goals in the final two minutes to snatch a sensational 2-2 draw with arch rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalen Stadium.
With 88 minutes gone, Bayern trailed 2-0 after Brazilian striker Ewerthon had netted in both halves but Bayern had saved their best for last.
"We controlled the game in the first half and their opening goal came from nothing," said Bayern manager Felix Magath. "We were fantastic in the closing stages."
Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio reduced the deficit with two minutes of normal time remaining and Dutch international Roy Makaay headed an incredible winner at the death to the disbelief of the capacity 83,000 crowd.
Elsewhere Bayer Leverkusen continue to perplex their supporters struggling to a 2-2 home draw against FC Nuremberg just three days after thrashing nine-time European champions Real Madrid 3-0 in the Champions League.
Manager Klaus Augenthaler was tearing his hair out at the BayArena as his side went two goals down to promoted Nuremberg.
A penalty from goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt (76) and another strike from in-form Bulgarian international Dimitar Berbatov four minutes later rescued Bayer from the jaws of defeat.
"It was always going to be difficult against FC Nuremberg after our superb performance against Real Madrid," added Augenthaler. "We have to learn to be patient in games such as this and be willing to win 1-0."
With Bayern and Bayer both dropping points, champions Werder Bremen took advantage courtesy of a 3-0 victory over Hannover.
Unfashionable VfL Wolfsburg are the new leaders of the German top flight with a 2-1 win over nine-man Hansa Rostock.
It is the first time Wolfsburg have sat at the Bundesliga summit and it could be for just 24 hours with VfB Stuttgart able to reclaim top spot with a win over Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
Bayern chief Felix Magath was left wiping the beads of sweat from his forehead after an action-packed 2-2 draw with Dortmund.
Ewerthon shot Borussia in front on 44 minutes, taking the ball all the way from the half way line before nutmegging Lucio and finishing with aplomb.
With 69 minutes on the clock, Ewerthon looked to have won the match for Dortmund converting a spot-kick after Thomas Linke fouled Czech marksman Jan Koller in the area.
But Bayern showed all their resilience as Lucio made amends for a shaky defensive display with a late goal.
It was Munich's first goal in Dortmund for almost three years but the second was forthcoming as Makaay leapt highest to power a header past Guillaume Warmuz.
"Bayern got stronger after we went two goals to the good," admitted Dortmund chief Bert van Marwijk. "The draw is a fair result but you should never throw away a two-goal lead."
After disposing of former Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes last week, managerless Schalke 04 continued their revival with a 3-2 comeback win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Danish international Ebbe Sand struck on 66 minutes to clinch all three points and crown a great week in which he has scored four times in two outings.
The odds on Klaus Toppmoller being the second managerial casualty of the 2004/05 season shortened after his SV Hamburg side lost 2-1 at Kaiserslautern.
Hamburg spent 10 million euros in the close season but lie third from bottom following four defeats in five games.
