Council Of Europe Welcomes Reopening Of Greek Cypriot School In Northern Cyprus

STRASBOURG - Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis said that he welcomed reopening of a Greek Cypriot secondary school in Dipkarpaz region of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Releasing a statement, Davis said that it was a very positive step on behalf of TRNC administration, noting that this initiative would contribute to confidence building measures between Turkish and Greek Cypriots on the island.
Davis said that Council of Europe had expressed its concerns over closure of this school and called on political parties in TRNC to find a viable solution to this issue last year, noting that he was very pleased that this problem was solved through mutual understanding and respect to human rights.
Greek Cypriot secondary school in Dipkarpaz opened its doors and started school year on Monday.
A total of 12 Greek Cypriot students enrolled in the secondary school which was established to educate them in their own mother tongue.
TRNC budget met expenses of restoration of the school which includes four classrooms, one computer room, principal and teacher rooms.
