Ruling And Opposition Parties To Present Key Amendments To Penal Code As Joint Proposal

ANKARA - Deniz Baykal, the leader of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), said on Tuesday that CHP and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) agreed to present key amendments to the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) as a joint proposal.
After his meeting with the Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and Justice Minister Cemil Cicek, Baykal told reporters that amendments to TCK would be adopted in the parliament as soon as possible, taking into consideration Turkey's European Union (EU) bid.
Chairpersons of the two parties re-assessed reactions of several circles to the amendments and tried to reach a consensus, Baykal noted.
Baykal added that they agreed at the end of their meeting to present motions for changes to the TCK as a joint proposal.
