"Peace Tent" For Two Italian Hostages Vandalized

ROME, Sept 13 (AFP) - A peace tent set up in Rome near the home of one of two Italian charity workers held hostage in Iraq was vandalized in the early hours Monday, drawing condemnation from the country`s politicians.
Overnight rainbow "peace" flags that had covered the "Peace Tent" were ripped down and swastikas drawn on it. The mayor of Rome, Walster Veltroni, decried "such a level of depravity and inhumanity".
"I hope the police force will quickly identify those who carried this attack out," he said.
"Even though the mobilization in Rome and in the rest of the country against the war and for the liberation of the hostages is strong, we`re witnessing this kind of thing. This act is a blow to the country`s unity," Green Party Member of Parliament Paolo Cento said.
The "Peace Tent" was set up by people close to Simona Toretta near her family`s home in the Cinecitta neighborhood a day after she and fellow-charity worker Simona Pari were kidnapped in Iraq on Tuesday.
