ATHENS, Sept 11 (AFP) - The Greek Orthodox Church confirmed that the Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria, Peter VII, died Saturday when the helicopter in which he and 16 other people were traveling crashed into the Aegean sea.
The military did not immediately confirm his death, although the army chief of staff Nikolaos Douvas said rescuers were in the process of recovering four bodies found floating at sea in the helicopter debris.
The debris was found off the site of Mount Athos, one of Orthodox Christianity`s holiest sites, where the helicopter was headed from Athens.
