ATHENS, Sept 11 (AFP) - Rescuers found wreckage floating at sea of the helicopter carrying the Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria, Peter VII, and 16 other people, which disappeared from radar screens Saturday after taking off from Athens, the Greek merchant marine ministry said.
The debris, spotted 5.5 nautical miles off the Halkidiki peninsula where Mount Athos, one of Orthodox Christianity`s holiest sites where the helicopter was headed, "are probably those of the helicopter but they still must be analysed," said the ministry.
The helicopter had taken off from Athens at 9:30 am (0630 GMT) and was supposed to land at noon (0900 GMT) on Mount Athos in northern Greece, air force spokesman Constantinos Prionas told AFP.
