WARSAW, Sept 11 (AFP) - Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski said Saturday that the war on terror launched three years ago in the wake of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington had failed to yield anticipated results.
"Three years after the tragic events in the United States, the war on terrorism still has not yielded anticipated results," he said in a statement released to mark the third anniversary of the attacks that claimed around 3,000 lives.
The Polish leader paid homage to victims of the attacks, saying : "It is with sadness, disappointment and shock seared in memory that we remember the thousands of people who died in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
"During this special day, we share the pain of their families and friends," he added.
Kwasniewski said international terrorism had become a "tool of criminals and madmen who are rejected by all peoples, the world community and all religions without exception."
He said last week's bloody school hostage siege in the southern Russian town of Beslan that killed at least 339 had shown that international terrorism remained "unpredictable".
But he said that with each attack, "terrorists were losing support and the resolve of countries and peoples to combat terrorism was growing".
