U.N. Office In Kosovo Evacuated After Bomb Find

PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro, Sept 10 (AFP) - UN staff in Kosovo's northern town of Kosovska Mitrovica were evacuated Thursday after a 500 kilo bomb was found in the vicinity of the UN building, an official said.
The bomb was found by workers digging at cement plant in the southern part of the ethnically divided town that has often been a scene of clashes between majority Albanians and minority Serbs.
"The UN staff and the people living nearby were asked to leave," UN spokesman in Kosovska Mitrovica Gyorgy Kakuk told AFP.
"We still do not know whether the bomb is left over from World War II or is more recent from the 1999 war."
UN police and NATO-led peacekeepers (KFOR) have cordoned off the area and are assessing what to do with the oversize bomb, which is thought to have been dropped from an airplane, he said.
NATO bombed Yugoslavia over 78 days in 1999 to force Serbs troops to relinquish the province after launching a crackdown on the ethnic Albanian separatists.
