Turkish Naval Forces Commander Opens Martyrs' Memorial In Sevastopol

SEVASTOPOL - Admiral Ozden Ornek, Turkish Naval Forces Commander, inaugurated on Friday the Martyrs' Memorial built in Sevastopol to commemorate Turkish soldiers who were fallen during the Crimean War.
Ornek represented Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer during ceremonies held to mark the 150th anniversary of the Crimean War. Delegations from Britain, France, Italy, Russia and Ukraine also attended the ceremonies.
Ornek said that ''this memorial was one of the best signs demonstrating that a pacific world could be assured''.
''Countries, which were enemies in the past, were now allies and friends'', Ornek said, adding that ''what they should do now was to pursue that friendship till eternity''.
Admiral Ornek will return to Turkey later in the day.
Crimean War was fought between Great Britain, France, Turkey, and Sardinia on one side, and Russia on the other in the Crimea between 1853 and 1856.
