Hurricane Ivan Kills Four in Venezuela, Displaces Dozens Across the Caribbean

Category Five Hurricane Ivan crossed through Venezuela and neighboring Caribbean islands on 9 September 2004, killing four people and injuring five more. The storm's sustained winds reached 260 kilometers per hour (about 160 miles per hour).

Around 80 people lost their homes as the hurricane passed. National Civil Protection Director Antonio Rivero confirmed the casualties and said the government had placed the country on a state of alert.

Rivero said the alert would remain in place until meteorological services confirmed that weather conditions had returned to normal.
