Attack On A Police Checkpoint In Diyarbakir While Commissioner Verheugen Is In The City

DIYARBAKIR - An armed attack was staged on a police checkpoint in southeastern city of Diyarbakir, while the EU Commissioner Gunther Verheugen was in the city. The attack killed a police officer and a guard, sources said on Tuesday.
Sources stated that terrorists opened fire at a checkpoint on the motorway between Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa at around 2 a.m., noting that police officer Fatih Mehmet Zorlu and guard Seyithan Tekin died in the attack.
Police Chief Orhan Okur examined the police checkpoint on which armed attack was staged.
An operation was launched in the region to capture terrorists, officials noted.
Guenter Verheugen, the European Union (EU) Commissioner, paying an official visit to Turkey, proceeded from Ankara to Diyarbakir on Monday. He met Diyarbakir Governor Nusret Miroglu and Mayor Osman Baydemir yesterday.
