LEFKOSA - If the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) did not take the new status quo in Cyprus into consideration or make a decision on a case filed by the Greek Cypriots against Turkey just as it had done in Loizidou case, this might cause serious problems, Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Friday.
Talat defined ECHR's move to delay its decision on the admissibility in the case of Greek Cypriot Myra Xenides-Arestis 'complaint against Turkey as ''an expected decision''. Arestis claims that she has been deprived of her right to property.
TRNC PM Talat stated that he did not prefer insolubility and a decision which might be the victory of one party and the defeat of the other.
The victory of one party could harm all efforts aiming to solve the Cyprus problem, Talat said.
Talat noted that if the ECHR took a decision similar to its previous decisions, this would totally end willingness of one side to solve the Cyprus problem.
He felt concerned that steps that could push Turkey into a difficult situation could be taken especially when he took into consideration the fact that Turkey was on the road to European Union (EU) membership, Talat said.
Talat said that compensation cases would reduce Greek Cypriots' wish to solve the Cyprus problem, and noted, ''with these cases, they will try to make Turkish side and Turkey be fed up.''
Stating that he had expressed his concerns during his meetings with EU officials, Talat said, ''I hope the decision will support solution.''
