New Poll Gives Kerry Slight Lead

WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (AFP) - A new opinion poll released Thursday gives Democratic US presidential contender John Kerry a slight lead over Republican incumbent George W. Bush.
The American Research Group poll of 1,014 people gave 48 percent of voter support to Kerry and 46 percent to Bush.
With independent Ralph Nader included in the November 2 vote, Kerry was given 46 percent, Bush 45 percent and Nader three percent.
The poll also indicated a growing number of Americans do not approve the president's policies -- 48 percent against and 45 percent in favour -- and a majority oppose his economic policy, 51 percent to 43 percent.
But Kerry's advantage among independent voters has been cut by five percentage points, with 49 percent saying they were ready to vote Democrat and 44 percent Republican.
With a margin of error of three percentage points, the poll confirmed that Kerry and Bush are still running neck and neck in the election campaign.
One month ago, the institute gave Kerry a 49-percent to 46-percent lead over Bush.
