New Chechen President To Take Office In One Month

MOSCOW, Sept 1 (AFP) - Kremlin-anointed Alu Alkhanov was Wednesday officially named as the new Chechen president and will take office in one month, an official said.
"Today, we officially announced the results of the election," Bouvaissari Arsakhanov, vice president of the Chechen commission, told AFP.
"It was a planned election and according to Chechen law, the winning candidate must take up his functions as president 30 days after the publication of the official protocol with the definitve results of the vote," he said.
The investiture ceremony must also take place 30 days after the publication of the protocol, Arsakhanov said.
The protocol, which was approved Wednesday by the electoral commission, is to be published in the "coming days," he added.
Alkhanov, who will succeed Akhmad Kadyrov, killed on May 9 in an attack in Grozny, was elected in a landslide vote on Sunday.
