MOSCOW, Aug 31 (AFP) - At least 10 people died and more than 50 wounded in a suicide bomb outside a Moscow subway station Tuesday, officials said, in an attack blamed on a lone female bomber.
Following is a list of the worst attacks in Moscow since 1996:
1996
June 11: A home-made bomb explodes in a subway car, killing four and injuring 12. Communists and supporters of President Boris Yeltsin blame each other for the attack, which comes four days before the first round of presidential elections.
July 11-12: Two bomb attacks in 24 hours on Moscow trolley-buses leave some 30 people injured just days after Yeltsin is re-elected president. The government blames Chechen separatists but there are suggestions it might have been the work of the Russian mafia in the wake of a presidential decree on stamping out crime.
1999
August 31: One person is killed in a bomb attack on a shopping centre near the Kremlin.
September 9: An apartment building is destroyed in a bomb blast, killing 92.
13: A second apartment block is destroyed by a bomb in the deadliest attack ever carried out in Russia, leaving 118 dead.
Neither attack is claimed by any group but the government blames Chechen rebels and on October 1, Russian forces intervene in the troubled republic.
2000
August 8: Thirteen people are killed when a bomb explodes in an underground walkway near Pushkin Square. The authorities are undecided as to where to pin the blame, saying it could be the work of Chechen rebels or part of a feud between rival gangs for the control of shops in the walkway.
2002
October 23-26: Some 40 Chechens take hostage more than 800 people attending a musical and threaten to kill them with over a 100 kilogrammes of explosives. 130 hostages are killed, 128 of them by a gas used by Russian special forces to subdue the gunmen before storming the theatre.
2003
July 5: Two female suicide bombers, at least one of Chechen origin, kill 20 people and injure 30 at a Moscow rock concert.
10: A Chechen woman fails in an attempt to blow up a restaurant in central Moscow but a bomb disposal expert dies trying to defuse the explosive device in her rucksack.
December 9: A suicide bomb attack, carried out by at least one woman, kills five others while injuring 14 outside a hotel opposite the Kremlin. The nearby Duma, the seat of the lower house of the Russian parliament, is thought to have been the target.
2004
February 6: A rush hour bombing hits the Moscow subway five weeks before presidential elections, killing 41 people.
