MOSCOW, Aug 31 (AFP) - Security was notched up further here Tuesday after an explosion on a crowded square outside a subway station blamed on a female suicide bomber killed at least seven people and wounded more than 30, officials said.
"Police personnel have been ordered to increase their vigilance and to pay special attention to suspicious persons and activities," a spokesman for the municipal security service told ITAR-TASS news agency.
Security patrols including the use of bomb-sniffing dogs were being enhanced at train stations, subway stations and airports and a temporary field office was set up at the site of Tuesday's blast to coordinate the early investigation, it said.
Officials from President Vladimir Putin down have offered assurances for the past week that security at public transport facilities in Moscow and elsewhere in Russia was heightened following the crash of two passenger jets blamed on terrorists.
