ATHENS, Aug 29 (AFP) - Yan Bhartelemy of Cuba fought off brave 17-year-old Turkish sensation Atagun Yalcinkaya in Sunday's Olympic light flyweight (48kg) final to win Cuba's third gold medal in Athens.
The 24-year-old Bhartelemy, 2001 world champion, was behind after the first round but his crisper punching made the difference from the second although Yalcinkaya fought back gamely in the fourth.
Bronze medals went to Sergey Kazakov of Russia and Zou Shiming of China.
Yalcinkaya had been attempting to become the youngest gold medal winner since Floyd Patterson won the middleweight title in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
That honour now goes to Amir Khan of Britain if he beats Mario Kindelan, the 33-year-old Cuban defending champion and three-time world champion, for the lightweight (60kg) title later Sunday.
