Israel has hit 230 targets in Gaza: army

JERUSALEM - Israeli warplanes have hit 230 targets in the Gaza Strip since launching a massive air bombardment of the Hamas-run territory on Saturday in response to rocket fire, the military said.

"Some 230 targets have been hit," said an army spokeswoman. "They include Hamas infrastructure like buildings, arms depots and rocket-launching zones."

Israel launched its mammoth bombing campaign against Hamas targets in Gaza mid-morning on Saturday in one of the largest military operations against the densely populated Palestinian enclave since Israel captured it in the 1967 war.

At least 280 Palestinians have been killed in the onslaught, most of them Hamas members, according to medics. Another 600 people have been wounded.

Hamas has responded by firing dozens of rockets into Israel, killing one Israeli and wounding a handful of others.
