SANTIAGO, Aug 26 (AFP) - Chile's Supreme Court on Thursday lifted the immunity from prosecution of former dictator Augusto Pinochet, who faces criminal charges over the disappearance of political opponents during Operation Condor.
Lawyers for the relatives of those who disappeared under Operation Condor, a top-secret program among South American dictatorships, argue Pinochet, 88, bears responsibility for the disappearances during his tenure.
In its ruling, the country's highest court upheld a ruling by a lower court clearing the way for Pinochet's prosecution. Pinochet ruled here from 1973 to 1990.
