BRUSSELS - Two chapters, "Free Movement of Capital" and "Information Society and Media", have been opened to negotiations within the scope of Turkey`s EU accession process.
The chapters were opened on Friday in an intergovernmental conference in Belgian capital of Brussels attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, France`s Minister of State for European Affairs Bruno Le Maire and Jean Christophe Filori, head of the European Commission`s Turkey department.
These two chapters brought the number of chapters opened to 10 out of 35, with only one successfully closed (chapter on Science and Research).
Timeline since the negotiations between Turkey and EU started is as follows:
December 2004 - European Union agrees to start negotiations with Turkey.
October 3, 2005 - Opening of six chapters of the Acquis: Right of Establishment & Freedom to provide Services, Company Law, Financial Services, Information Society & Media, Statistics and Financial Control
June 12, 2006 - Chapter on Science and Research opened and closed.
March 29, 2007 - Chapter on Enterprise and Industrial Regulations opened.
June 25, 2007 - Chapters on Statistics and Financial Control opened, but the opening of the chapter on economic and monetary policy was blocked.
December 20, 2007 - Chapters on Health & Consumer Protection and on Trans-European Transport are opened.
