ANKARA - Caroline Flint, the Minister for Europe at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, met with Turkish Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Murat Mercan in Ankara on Tuesday.
Receiving Flint, Murat Mercan said that the European Union (EU) is a strategic goal for Turkey.
"Turkey is determined to go on with reforms in order to get harmonized with the EU. We are pleased with Britain's support extended to Turkey's EU bid. We expect the EU to fulfill its promise and not to implement double standards against Turkey," Mercan said.
Caroline Flint, in her part, said that the participation of the parliaments is important in the EU process.
Britain's support of both Turkey and Turkey's membership in the EU will continue, Flint said.
My current visit to Turkey takes place to find out what could be done in the year 2009, Flint also said.
Mercan's meeting with Flint later continued behind closed doors.
